Under Armour Bigger than Adidas in U.S. Sportswear Market

The second position in the U.S. sportswear market had been held by Adidas until recently. In 2014, Under Armour overtook the sports goods giant to take second place.
U.S. sales of Under Armour in footwear and apparel generated US$2.6 billion in 11 months, starting from 3 January. In comparison, Adidas accrued only US$1.6 billion. The data was presented by SportScanInfo and Sterne Agee on Thursday. Both Adidas and Under Armour still trailed Nike, who earned US$11.8 billion for the 2014 U.S. sales. The Jordan brand from Nike alone managed to gather US$2.5 in shoe sales.
Nike has been in the lead for a long time now when it comes to U.S. sales. More than 90 per cent of the basketball shoes sold belong to Nike or Jordan. At the same time, both Nike and Under Armour have been increasing their market share through the latest period.
Adidas was superseded in the U.S. sales by Under Armour in autumn 2014. But the numbers did not give a strong confirmation until the end of the year. The statistics released on Thursday painted a clear picture of the sportswear company from Baltimore marching ahead of Adidas during the closing months of 2014.
Adidas ranked third in the overall apparel and footwear market and had suffered a fall of almost 30 per cent in footwear sales and 20 per cent in apparel sales. Its footwear brands, Reebok, fell 27 per cent to US$252 million.
Under Armour is still in an early stage compared to its rivals. The company had also lost a bidding war against Nike for the NBA MVP, Kevin Durant.
