The company SunPower Corporation (SPWR) is the second-largest solar manufacturer in U.S. It is now offering consumers in California with energy-storage systems that will help to power the house during the night. This electricity will be generated from the solar power during the day.
Currently, the company is involved in testing systems which combine rooftop panels with battery storage in homes which were recently build by KB Home in San Jose. These systems will help to decrease the homeowner’s dependency on electricity and reduce their power bills. These systems will also provide electricity whenever there are blackouts.
Although, this technology is not widely used as of yet and SunPower is expecting to install around 10 systems in KB Homes in 2014, it is expected that this will become the standard in the next five years.
According to the CEO, Tom Werner the cost of storage will decrease dramatically in the next five years. He also said that this storage is right now how solar technology used to be few years back.
SunPower is also planning on testing power-storage systems in countries such as Australia this year and in Germany during the next year. SunPower has already installed around 15,000 rooftop solar system in the U.S. out of which 3,000 are with KB Home.
According to Steve Ruffner, the president of KB’ Southern California section, once these batteries are incorporated the homeowners will be able to see the amount of significant savings they can have.
