In the last couple of years tea has emerged as a popular beverage. Variants such as green tea, white tea, and oolong tea has found themselves a sustainable position in the market. However, this is not all. Tea is a more versatile beverage than consumers can probably think of.
The consumer research manager for Technomic Inc., based in Chicago - Anne Mills mentioned in September blog that there is a visible rise in the demand for tea-flavored beverage available in on- and off-premise alike. In the segment of off-premise retail, Lipton launched a lemon-flavored variant called Lipton Sparkling Iced Tea earlier this month. Other flavors offered by the brand include raspberry and peach.
Sparkling ICE launched a range of Sparkling ICE Teas is the aforementioned flavors, while organic read-to-drink teas available in the market such as Honest Tea are also rising in popularity, Mills wrote in the blog.
In most of the retail channels of Chicago, tea is holding on to its position against the growing popularity of energy and sports drink. As per the numbers for 2014 released by IRI, bottled tea sales registered an increase by 7.9% compared to its sales records the year before. Due to its growing popularity, ready-to-eat teas are now considered as “bright spots” in the specialty beverage section of a retail store, and it is expected to soon overtake coffee and other milk substitutes in its popularity.
Regarding the tea trend, Mills also wrote that it is gradually taking over the foodservice space since the number of specialty tea and iced tea beverages at emerging and Top 500 restaurants chain grew by 5.7% and 8.8% respectively during the period from 2013 to 2015.
On April this year, Wendy launched the Honest Tropical Green Tea, which offer proprietary blend of green tea leaves. This tea is gaining popularity owing to its rich flavor.
