Pepsi, the world’s favored soda maker restores its position. Pepsi now leads Diet Coke, which had taken the 2nd position after Coca-Cola.  Diet Coke now has a market share of 8.5% slightly lower than Pepsi which is 8.8%. Coca-Cola emerged as the clear leader with 17.6% of the market though the volume increase was only 0.1% in 2014.

Diet Coke took over the 2nd position in 2010, pushing down Pepsi on the third position. Pepsi having restoring position is a clear indication of preferred consumer choice of regular sodas over diet sodas. This has also happened due to shift from low calorie drinks owing to mistrust of artificial sweeteners.

Generally consumers have been shifting away from diet drinks, which helped Pepsi restore its original 2nd position. In the U.S., the sale of diet drinks has dropped by 20% according to a reliable industry source. Both it is because of low consumption of sodas, and also mistrust towards artificial sweetening agents.

Diet Coke lost its position to Pepsi, mainly because consumers have a negative perception towards artificial sweetening agents. The reason of consumer’s negative attitude towards these artificial sweetening agents is what making the industry turns their heads. This has been told by a leading industry source.

Coca-Cola is safe on the first position having a clear market share of 17.6%. The other CSDs to follow Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Diet Coke are Mt.Dew, Dr Pepper, Sprite, Diet Pepsi, Fanta, Diet Mt Dew, and Coke Zero. The ranking is given as per Beverage Digest.
