Nike Teams up With Sacai

In an unexpected move, sporting goods giant Nike has partnered up with major Japanese fashion label Sacai. The joint venture will feature work on an eight-piece womenswear collection that will also include sneakers. The news was revealed by Business of Fashion on Thursday morning.

Experts say that the match-up could potentially be a perfect culmination of ahtleisure goods and could be beneficial for both brands.

Sacai has fast become one of the most popular brands in the fashion industry. Some of the label’s admirers include Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld and fashion editors Suzy Menkes and Anna Wintour. At the same time, Sacai is still considered to be a minor label, which means its partnership with Nike could prove to be a significant boost to their business.

Nike already dominates the performance sneakers market and the partnership is the latest in its attempts to accentuate its fashion profile to penetrate the women’s activewear market.

The creative director and founder of Sacai, Chitose Abe, is famous for her use of innovative materials and mixing dissonant elements. For the partnership collection, Abe has been reviewing the Nike archives and has performed creative repurposing. She intends to use Nike’s fashioning nylon Windrunner jacket into a newly designed panel skirt. Abe has a strong portfolio to her name, which includes working under Rei Kawakubo and Junya Watanabe.

Abe said in a recent press release that she will be working with traditional silhouettes and ideas that originate from performance and utility in sportswear. She is interested in creating hybrid fashions that combine multiple fabrics that will create a completely original and wearable experience.
