Google enjoys being the leader in craziest of innovations and inventions. This time on, the company has geared up to launch a coming-of-edge range of contact lenses, for which the company has even acquired patents rights. The news of Google being granted the patent right, came at a time when the company is gearing up to somewhat alter its approach to Glass.

Although, Google has taken a step back on its offering of Google Glass, but the company has maintained that this does not entail that the project is dead. Commenting on the company’s stand on Glass, Executive Chairman for Google said, “big and very fundamental platform for Google.”

He further added, the company only stalled the Explorer program which the press conflated as cancelling the whole project. He also mentioned that Google believes in taking risks, and the company has not taken any steps or did not make any announcement for the press to think that they are hinting on closure.

With respect to the latest innovation by Google, the company already manufactures smart contact lenses, which are independent of the much talked about Glass program. The contact lenses, which at present the company is producing are solely related to health concerns. It will specifically help in controlling the glucose level, to keep a check on diabetes. Google collaborated with Novartis, the last summer, to work on the lenses and compete similar products found in the market for blood-sugar tracking, as well as be crucial in the treatment of presbyopia. Presbyopia is a condition in which the eye becomes smaller with age.

According to the agreement, Alcon eye care unit of Novartis will continue to manufacture and commercialize the Google contact lens technologies.
