The global market for smartphone operating systems (OS) has been growing outstandingly ever since its inception. The increasing penetration of smartphones in emerging economies is fueling the worldwide smartphone OS market extensively. Android, iOS, AND Windows OS are the most demanded operating systems in the world.
Google’s Android is the leading OS for smartphones and tablets at present. Earlier this year, it has introduced the sixth edition of Android, Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Currently, the IT giant is working on Android 6.1, which is expected to be unveiled by June 2016.
Samsung dominates the smartphone market in the Android segment. However, the underwhelming performance of Galaxy S6 as well as S6 Edge, the flagship releases of Samsung this year, has affected the sales to a great extent.
On the other hand, small-scale companies such as Micromax and Xiaomi are likely to take over the market in the near future, owing to the robust increase in unit shipments. Google, LG, Motorola, and HTC are the other major smartphone manufacturers that use Android operating systems.
Microsoft’s Windows is the second most sought-after operating system for smartphones and tablets across the world. The leading IT firm has been restructuring its product portfolio in the OS segment. It recently upgraded Windows OS to Windows 10.
According to Microsoft, Windows 10 is the best platform ever, it has produced. The company expects a huge demand for Widows 10 from enterprises and employees, owing to premium features offered by this platform for mobile productivity, virtualization, manageability, and security. However, the market situation is not so convincing for Microsoft, and subsequently for the Windows OS.
Acer is the newest entrant on board while Samsung shows an impressive growth with its ATIV series, which runs on Windows platform.
Apple’s iOS is witnessing a decline in its market share. However, in spite of the seasonal decrement, the company enjoyed a steady growth, thanks to the insatiable appetite of consumers for the large-screen iOS devices. The immense popularity of the iPhones is likely to maintain a stable rise in the iOS segment.
